The Importance Of Buying Your Songs As A DJ

I wanted to touch on a subject that has been running through my mind for quite some time, DJs who spin pirated songs.

Music is something I hold very dear to me and I would never want to profit off of someones work that I didn’t pay for. Not buying the songs that you play hurts the scene in the long run, let me explain…

When you professionally performing at a party or club, your generally getting paid to do so. You are directly making money off playing an artists song which you have not paid for if you pirated the song.

The problem with this is that it adds no support to the artists while you reap all the rewards.

Even though you may have had the argument a million times about how you feel that record labels deserve this, most of the time the songs you are spinning have been created by a small label, not the corporate giants you want to stand up to.

Because you have cut off the income for these artists to continue to produce music, you’ve just now cut off the songs you’re able to play, hence ‘biting the hand that feeds you’. If producers weren’t there to create songs, you would have nothing to play, get what I’m saying?

These producers are just like you and me, they need to get by in life and choose to produce music to accomplish this.

I know, many artists do it solely for the love of the music but they still need to eat at the end of the day. By strictly profiteering off these producers, in my mind, you’ve just sold the scene.

What would happen if your favorite producer wasn’t able to create the music you love to play anymore?

By helping them out by buying their songs, you’ve ensured that they will continue to create great music for you to spin. That’s why I’m saying you should always try to buy the music you’re playing.

I’ll go a little easy if you’re just practicing at home or playing for friends but if you’re making a living off of other people’s work, you should probably reevaluate your image.

It’s a trade off in DJing. You promote the producers through spinning their songs while they provide you the material to DJ.

I know I’ll probably get some nasty comments but you have to see that you shouldn’t be taking advantage of these producers; it will bite you in the ass in the long run.

I seem to be rather lucky as of late because I keep running into people from Toronto haha.

I'm glad we meet on the same level. One of the things that really made me feel like writing this article was when Simon Posford (Hallucinogen, Shpongle, Younger Brother) made this really emotional post on the Twisted forums. He really shed light on now, regardless of how big you'd think indie labels may be, it really does hurt when the songs are pirated.

I think the net is very important to discover new songs but there should always be support of the artists. With DJing, it would just seem very unfair to become successful off the backs of artists that don't get supported ya know?
