You've got it! Niiiiice setup. You've got everything that's certainly going to last you.

You may feel that you might want to pick up a midi controller at some point but it's all about personal preferences; it sounds like you're going to be doing a lot of work on the computer end which feels great for some; the midi controller is mostly just to have that physical feel and lets you control everything based on muscle memory - even a basic midi controller such as a small Akai (which is really cheap) can be all that you need if you want to pick on up since you already have so much control.

I say play with it for a while and then see how you feel.

It really depends on your overall budget Stephen.

The more that you're able to save, the more flexibility you'll have to pick up higher end gear. Since you may be planning to do parties in the future (if you think you've reached that level) than it's probably best to stick to gear like Technics, Vestax, Pioneer - these make great equipment that can be found for a good price and get you really setup to expand since they generally are quality.

If at all possible, try to see if you can get some play time in with Serato at a local shop or if you know any friends - feel it out so you can be sure it's right for you.

Although I'd recommend picking up Technics 1210's (for vinyl), CDJ's are perfect for CD DJing and if you want a taste of what you can do with digital DJing than a Vestax or Hercules will get you started easily - these are all relatively cheap :)

I was out this weekend looking and decided that I wanted to finally purchase a set up. Now that I have looked, I think I am more unsure about what exactly it is that I want.

I bought a Macbook Pro.
Ordered a Denon X600 mixer
Want to purchase Virtual DJ 7. I have an older VDJ but, want the new one.
Pioneer HDJ1000 Headphones
I wasn't wanting to get any type of turntables at this time (I have no interest in Vinyl may go cd at some point).

Now for my question, I want to know... will I be able to utilize the options on my mixer and that my software (VDJ) will recongnize everything and vice versa. Expecially the timecode. I want to basically be a bedroom dj making CD's for friends but also, be able to play to a small crowd.

Am I making the right move? Am I way off? or should I have gone with a midi controller?

Your thoughts and suggestions please.

Thanks for your help.

Muxx, this is awesome i wish i would have had this when i tried to start up. I bought the Numark Total Control but i didn't have the DJIO or anything and now i see i should have gone and gotten the serato or such and real timetables when i had the chance. Thanks for reaffirming what i thought i knew.

Bru, I've been looking for information like this for a LONG time! What annoyed me most is getting tidbits here and there, and then to top it off, not knowing what else is needed for the info they've given you to work. This is the best Tutorial site I've seen and I'll be looking in to see what else you have to teach us :D I might not have the budget to buy a full set just yet, but a good midi controller, and the decent PC/soundcard/speakers/headphone setup will get me started until I'm better! Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!
