How addicted to music are you?

DJ’s have a tough job, they have to listen to music all day, dig through crate after crate and play for rabid crowds at intense parties.

Sarcasm aside, I love listening to music which had me thinking today how much music should a DJ listen to in their everyday life?

To me, the more music you listen to everyday, the more opportunities you have to find new tracks to play. You also get to train your ears to the rhythm when you are listening intently.

DJing is, in some ways, like writing. The more a writer works on their work and reads, the better they become over time. Likewise, the more you practicing your mixing and devote time to listening to music, the better DJ you will become in the long run.

1. You Find New Music

When you listen to nothing but the radio all day, you never really dig deeper than what others think is good enough to listen to.

The net gives us all such a great opportunity to dig deeper into our favorite genre’s to find music we never heard.

Every day you can find new music that is deeper, rougher, dirty, perfect for your mixing.

Just the other day a friend sent over a few tracks that blew my mind, I never heard of them but after I gave them a listen I continued to dig deeper of what these artists had to offer – some truly amazing stuff.

As a beginner DJ, you should always be looking out for new and old tracks. Digging through crates and looking through the darkest parts of the net to find that exclusive track that no one else has heard of before.

2. It Trains Your Ears

One thing I like to do while listening to music is think of what it would be like if I was spinning the track.

If I am not listening for the enjoyment, I try to count along with the beat, think of different points when I can mix another track in, ways that I can remix and tweak the sound in my own mixing.

DJ sets are an amazing way to train your ear even when you’re not practicing. What I like to do is see if I can tell when the DJ begins to mix out a track into another or figure out what they are doing to make that unique, live remix of a track.

The more you listen, the more you begin to understand what others are doing with the sound they play.

Sometimes your mind will be blown when you aren’t able to identify when the second track came in, now that’s good mixing!

3. It’s Fun As Hell

We’re all music junkies here else you wouldn’t be reading this blog.

I can’t go for more than an hour without some kind of music, I always have it going. Even now, I have a Dark Psytrance mix blasting in my ears. It’s a little distracting but it keeps the pace of my writing (which I love).

When you practice for long hours, it’s good to just sit back and enjoy what others are playing.

Daydream about what it would be like if you were spinning that mix or producing that song, the happiness in people as they hear that track and use it to inspire you to mix something great.

How Addicted Are YOU?

How often do you listen to music each day?
