Alright, we all know about Facebook because we use it ever day but there’s a whole other element of the social network that can be tapped into in terms of promoting DJ gigs.

Sure enough, you probably already have some friends that are constantly sending you party invitations – well, this is essentially what we’re going to be talking about but on the other end where you will be setting up the promotions for your gigs, mixes and so you can build a fan base. Sound good? Let’s get going …

Get a Facebook Fan Page

There is a 5,000 friend limit on normal Facebook pages which is no good in terms of building a fan base because, in time, you will hit that limit and then no more people can follow you. Facebook saw this and so they put together Fan Pages which are nothing more than a normal profile but with the ability to add in a few extra features for building a fan base.

Although this video is a bit cheesy, it’ll take you through the process of setting up your Facebook Fan Page. There is a bit of hype and gimmicks to the video but it still shows the process which is what you’d need to work through in order to get something setup.

Link to video: http://youtu.be/bsobq2Jk6YI

I know you’re tech-savvy, you are DJing after all, so something like setting up a simple Fan Page shouldn’t be any problem but if you do get caught up, refer back to the video or check out David Sabat’s Guide to Facebook for DJ’s – he takes you through a lot of the pro’s and con’s of the different Facebook features and gives a few tips on promoting your Facebook page.

Get a Sexy Flyer

People’s attention spans are incredibly short; I’ve probably already lost half of you in this post – just as an example – so one of those all important elements of promoting DJ gigs on Facebook is to create a gig flyer that’s going to catch someone’s eyes really, really quick.

If you’re the DIY type, I suggest you check out an earlier post about which has 10 Photoshop Tutorials for Creating DJ Flyers. Of course, you don’t actually need Photoshop, you can use a free program like Gimp or use an online photo editor which can handle just about anything you throw at it.

If you aren’t DIY, than I suggest you hunt down a few local designers or ask fellow DJ’s where they are getting their flyers from. Chances are, a friend of a friend probably knows someone that understands design and is itching to work on DJ flyers – I’ve had my hand at it, it’s fun, there’s others out there that are the same.

The flyer is what’s going to get people to take notice immediately. You have the title and link and everything but nothing stands out more than a picture on Facebook – remember, short attention span, etc etc. Grab them quick with something that looks hot and you’ll get them over to your event or fan page.

Share Great DJ Mixes

Perhaps the best way to promote yourself as a DJ, on Facebook, is to share your DJ mixes (or others you’ve found to be really great). People are following you because they want the music; they don’t necessarily want to hear what you had for breakfast or some broken relationship status poem – give em what they want, give em music.

Use websites like Soundcloud and Mixcloud to upload your mixes so you can easily share them on your Facebook pages. In fact, you can even embed some of these onto your Fan Page using some of the widgets; you could create a page solely dedicated to something like “mix of the month” or something like that.

Upload a Video to Facebook

I’ve talked before about using Youtube to promote DJs but, as you know, Facebook also has video sharing which is perfect for sharing some of your mixes, party videos and more.

A local crew where I’m at is always uploading the latest videos from the parties they throw. What it does, from people’s reactions, is get them talking about the music, the parties and the fact that they can’t wait til the next one.

If you’re doing gigs, setup a video camera and record it. If anything, you could rip the audio and upload the live mix but you can also take advantage of the video so people can be a part of the experience if they didn’t get to go.

To go even more hardcore, you could upload videos as the nights go on within your Fan Page so that if someone is 50/50 on going to the party and see the video, they’d be all over it. You could also do this with streaming video from UStream and let people watch the party unfold live!

Take some Event Pictures

Pictures get people talking, plain and simple. Facebook is great at facial recognition so it’s a great way promote your gigs by uploading event pictures and then tagging people that showed up. The people getting tagged will come over and talk about the event and their friends will see the good time they had and may join in next time.

Hire a photographer to take great pictures of the gigs or just ask people to upload their shots after the party is over. You’ll find that people are easily on board with sharing their experiences and this is a great way to get some excellent feedback on the gig and get people talking about the next.

Final Thoughts

We live in the information age; you no longer need to send out thousands of mixtapes and demos to get people interested in your music or parties. With a simple upload, you could create an event page for the next gig in a few minutes and have people ready to go months in advanced. Facebook is pretty awesome for promotion; you already know it so use it to get your name out there!

Youtube DJing has caught on over the last few years because it’s an easy place to share and promote your mixing skills without the trouble of going through traditional channels like sending out CD’s or trying to get people to find your mixes through your own website.

So, how does one become a Youtube DJ? This article will share a few tips on how to get started from recording your mixes to getting your Youtube videos promoted to the point that they help land you DJ gigs – sound good? Let’s get started …

Part 1: Get the video gear

There are two good options for you when making Youtube DJ videos and that is:

Recording yourself mixing using a video camera

Recording your mix using a piece of software and then editing a video

I’d recommend you go with the first because you’d be able to show your mixing skills off and people will be able to recognize who you are rather than just your name but I know there are many of you that are a little camera shy so recording your mix, editing it and uploading it works too.

For cameras, I’d recommend the Flip Mino or Kodak ZI-8 because each of these is high definition cameras that will certainly get the job done. They let you easily hook up the camera to the computer and some of them, like the Flip, come with editing software. You can pick up either of these for under $150 which is a good investment when you consider you can make your Youtube DJ videos AND take it to parties and festivals later on.

Once you’ve got these, you just need some video editing software which is generally installed on computers like Windows Movie Make or iMovie on Mac; otherwise, check out Adobe Audition or Sony Vegas which will easily handle your video editing.

Part 2: Get to mixing

awwwww yeah

What’s a Youtube video on DJing if you’re not actually mixing, duh. The next part of doing Youtube DJing is to … make a mix. Since you only have about 10 minutes (until you get more time from Youtube), you’re kind of limited which means that each song and effect you put into your mix needs to be really mind blowing to catch people’s attention.

Do what you would normally do when creating a DJ mix. Choose a great selection of songs or even theme your Youtube DJ videos by playing certain genres of music, music based on released dates (such as the new song mix format) or some classic tune mixes.

Bring the best that you can so the Youtube video helps with promotion. If you need additional help, check out this other post on how to build a better DJ mix to bring out the best in your abilities.

Remember, you only have a limited amount of time so bring the ruckus.

Part 3: Get the video on Youtube

Once the video is created, edited and looking good, you’ll need to get it onto Youtube. If you don’t have a Youtube account than you can sign up at http://www.youtube.com/create_account; fill in the information that matters and setup your account, easy enough.

Quick note: When you’re editing your videos, be sure to add your Youtube channel name and contact information so if people embed the video on other websites, people still have a way to easily figure out who’s mixing and how to get in touch.

Okay, get your video up on Youtube and do a bit of work to make sure that it’s looking good such as adding a title that perfectly describes the video, choose something like “10 Minute Dubstep Youtube Mix” or something akin to that. Fill in the description with the tracks that you’ve used because people always ask for the songs. Add in your website link or Twitter name or some kind of contact method so people can get a hold of you which is perfect in the event that someone wants to book you for a show if they really liked the video.

Also, get people to subscribe to your channel and build up a Youtube following by just flat out telling people in the description.

Part 4: Promoting your Youtube mixes

Alriiiiight, now you need to get your DJ video found on Youtube. Well, that’s easy because if you optimized the video it will show up in search engines but besides doing that, you can begin sharing it on Facebook, forums, Twitter and other social networks you’re on.

If you have a website, you can embed your video onto your website. You could also send your video out to people on your email newsletter if you have one. Do what you would normally do when sharing video. Submit it to sites that you’re always on (maybe Reddit?) and just be conscious that you have a video (or a dozen) out there that people could be interested in.

Check out other people’s channels and leave a link to your video if they’re also doing mixes in your type of music – network yo!

Part 5: Getting gigs and earning a few bucks

Finally, sit back and keep pushing you video out wherever you can go; build up that view count and subscribers to your channel. It might be completely random but you may land a few gigs based on your videos. If you have a website offering DJ services, you could have your video to show off your skills for when people are thinking about hiring you – think of it like a sales video of some sort.

If your video starts to take off than Youtube will let you monetize it through Adsense and video ads. Depending on what you want, you can agree to the terms and have it there to make a bit of money if people click on your ads. You could make a nice bit of money off to the side for your mixes, cool enough.

Don’t rely on your Youtube DJ videos to land you gigs though; you still need to be actively promoting your DJing by going to parties, handing out DJ business cards, setting up a website and more.

Bonus: Youtube Video Resources

In case you’re still a little bit confused about online video and Youtube in general, for DJing, here are a few resources that will help you get started and up to speed:

ReelSEO – This is a website that talks a lot about video production and how to promote Youtube videos online; there’s a lot of good tutorials but you have to dig around a bit because there’s a lot of news on there too.

Youtube and Video Marketing: One Hour a Day – A book on how to get started with video marketing; don’t let the name scare you, it’s just the practice of creating videos to promote yourself which is basically what you’re doing with your Youtube DJ videos.

Video Sharing Websites – A list of other video sharing websites that you could list your videos on if you want to extend your reach besides Youtube.

Those should get you started with promoting your Youtube DJ videos and understanding it a bit more.

Conclusion

So, hopefully you’ve found this guide helpful. Youtube is huge, you know that and you’ve probably seen quite a few DJ’s showing off their skills on the video site – get started too! You can really make a name or yourself if you do mixes on Youtube so why not tap into it for your promotion – it’s smart, that’s what.

Twitter is a social media platforms that lets your easily connect to people and share message under 140 characters or less. Twitter has taken off like wildfire over the last few years because it’s free, simple to use and can greatly help build a community behind your brand.

For DJ’s, Twitter can become your best friend because it will let you connect with your fans, share your mixes, upload pictures from parties and promote the hell out of your gigs. This post will share how to use Twitter to promote your DJ gigs.

Step 1: Find your audience

The first and most important action to take when using Twitter to promote DJ gigs is to connect with your audience. The fastest way to find people interested in your mixes and gigs is to use the Twitter Search feature to browse for people using keywords which relate to what you play, your location and even the clubs around your area.

You can only follow a certain amount of people each day so spend time to dig through each person to make sure they aren’t bots. Send people a quick message that you’re now following them and maybe even try spurring up a conversation. If you added 10 new people a day, in a month you could have 300 hardcore followers that may come right out to your gigs.

Step 2: Let people find you on the web

Having a DJ website is pretty much essential these days because it lets people easily find you online. However, you don’t necessarily need a crazy website because you could let people know about your Twitter on sites like Facebook, Youtube, forums and more.

Sign up for Twitter and let people know, on your social network accounts, that you now have Twitter and that you’ll keep people updated there. Install a Twitter app on your phone so you can be active on the social platform when you’re out and about. Share pictures, upload mixes, talk with people and let people know, wherever you go, where they can find you.

Step 3: Share mixes and build a fan base

People may follow you because they like who you are but many people use Twitter just to find new information and cool stuff; for people that are into music it’s going to be things like mixes and exclusive tracks. You can use Twitter for connecting with people by sharing your mixes that you’ve uploaded on music sharing websites.

If you create a rockin’ set than you could really start to pick up a fanbase when others share it with others. If you go back to how you found people, on Twitter, and used search to find people talking about the genre of music you spin you could directly message people and let them know you have an awesome set they could listen to.

Step 4: Announce new gigs you’re playing

After you’ve spent the time finding your community, building up a following and getting used to Twitter it’s time to get to the promotion part. As you could imagine, the process of promoting your gigs, using Twitter, is pretty much like how you would be using it up until this point; but now you’re a bit more direct.

A few days before your gigs you should let people know where and when you’re going to be playing. Keep letting people know all the way right up until the date. Once you’re at the gig you should upload and share what’s going on at the party to get people excited and to come on out. People want to see a happenin’ party so if you can show that there are people there, drinks going on, music playinig that you’re going to get the locals to come on out.

Step 5: Follow up people that went

Once the party is over you should take advantage of Twitter and get in touch with the people that went. Try to get people to upload their own pictures they’ve taken at the party and discuss how it went. You can use your follow up with people as a great tool for research to see if you did anything wrong or right.

Additionally, you can get people talking with one another on other social networks like Facebook. Bring your following to the party, get them to talk, share what’s up and boom, you’ve got yourself a strong following that will come out to your gigs!

Bonus: Easily find Twitter followers

Twitter can be an extremely powerful tool for DJ’s trying to get their name out there. Club promoters want you to bring in people else you may get the boot. For this reason, you’ll need to easily find Twitter followers but this can take a lot of time.

Enter: TweetAdder.

TweetAdder is a program that will help you find people to follow and even automate the process. Additionally, you can schedule your tweets so even when you’re playing you can let people know where you’re at and get people down to your gigs.

If you had 1,000 rabid followers and got just 10% to come down to your gig that would be well over 100 people. Now imagine if you had 100,000 followers from using a tool like TweetAdder; that 10% of your fanbase coming down is well over 10,000 people. Additionally, imagine how well your new release will do when you shoot out a new tweet linking to your soundcloud account!

Twitter can be immensely powerful but you’re going to need followers; this tool can greatly help you find them and really get rockin!

Let’s suppose that you’ve really mastered the art of mixing, choosing your music, maybe played a few parties and can agree that your ability to DJ is ready to be pushed out into the world; it’s time get promoting baby! But hold your horses for a minute, you may want to do a few things (detailed in the post) to create your first DJ promo mix.

Step 1: Mix Your Ass Off!

The mix you plan to create for your promo needs to be the best of your ability; for this reason, you’ll need to give it your all – as if you’re performing in front of a crowd and everything is on the line.

Mix your ass off! The plan is to deliver the best of your ability because you’ll want to create something that people will remember, share and comment on.

You may want to keep your mix to around 20 minutes since most club and label owners are very busy but if you want to truly go for the fans – keep it around an hour.

To the point: Dig out all of your best tunes, try your best tricks (without being gimmicky) and create a mix that blows the socks off people.

Step 2: Give It A Listen

Much like any piece of work you create; you need to back and give it a few listens and be prepared to edit or redo the entire thing.

Much like a post (such as this one), pieces are rarely spot-on the first time through. You may pick up very little subtleties that you didn’t catch while mixing such as off-set beats, clicks, harmony and more.

You can bet that if you hear it – others will. You want to strive for perfection so keep your mind open about remixing your set to tighten it up.

Step 3: Packaging Your Mix

After your mix has been completed, it’s time to export it into a variety of formats so you can share it online and offline; here’s a few ways that I’d suggest:

Creating a CD – Load up a program like Audacity and master out the sound, chop off the ends and then burn it off onto a bunch of CD’s so you can send out and hand out to people.

Encoding an MP3 – While in Audacity, save the mix as a FLAC file but also encode it to MP3 so you can share it on sites like MixCloud and the various other websites that let you upload music.

Create a YT Vid – Chop up your mix into 10 minute chunks and put it up on Youtube as well. YT gets a TON of traffic so you may as well take advantage of it. Throw in some great visuals and you’re game!

Try to get your mix into as many formats as possible so it can be shared and listened to on any number of players: computers, iPods, radios and more.

Step 4: Promoting Your Mix!

The next step in creating your promo mix is to promote the hell out of it. Your mix may be the most amazing piece of work in the world but if it doesn’t get heard than it doesn’t mean much; try some of these:

Share it in Forums – Jump on forums that share your music and create a thread that talks about your mix; be open to feedback so you can touch up your mix and create a better one next time.

Get on the social circuit – Use Twitter, Facebook and other social networks to share the hell out of your promo mix. Have your online friends do the same by telling as many people as possible online.

Launch a blog – Start up a blog (or website) where you can upload your mix and talk about whatever you want (much like this one).

Like any piece of content, dig around into other websites and methods you’d normally use to share information; just this time it will be your mix.

Step 5: Making The Most Of It

Now let’s get down and dirty to make the most out of your DJ promo mix. Don’t just stop at creating and pushing it out there; leverage the hell out of your abilities to get it heard:

Share it all the time - Every opportunity you get, try to share your mix. Talking to someone? Share the mix. On a forum? Share the mix. Promote the daylights out of it like everything is resting on its success; because it is!

Ninja promote it – Every party you go to and people you run into – give out a CD, tell them about your mix or throw a few CD’s into people’s car. If they’re coming back from a party than they want something to listen to: let it be your mix.

Point people back to you – Write your email on the CD, include a link in your mix and generally let it be known where people can find you; don’t expect them to magically discover you, make sure you’re known.

Think of your mix like a product you created for your business; don’t settle for a one-off promotion. Try to continually reference it whenever possible and make the most out of it until you either land a deal or create your next promo mix.

Where To Go From Here

The idea behind your promo mix is to create the best possible work you can. You realistically want to continue mixing during the creation and promotion but try to keep it as a definitive item to identify who you are.

Think of your DJ mix as your legacy; even if you don’t immediately land anything from the early promotion, people will still be able to find it later on especially if you share it online.

If you’re looking for a great set of videos, guides and tutorials for learning how to create an amazing mix, learning beyond the basics and even promoting yourself than I would recommend the following:

Learn how to promote yourself as a DJ to gain more fans, open up the possibility of mixing in clubs and spreading your mix on the net.

Promotion, one of the deciding factors of some DJs wouldn’t you suppose? Before you scoff at promotion, do realize that if you do plan get out there so people can hear your mixing, you will need to try out some promotional tactics.

Promotion isn’t all bad – just think, you’re spreading your awesome mixes to those that may not be able to find them on their own!

So this brings us to the real question: “how do I promote myself as a DJ?”.

There are many different ways for DJs to promote their mixes, skills and business.

For each of these, some may work better for the type of DJ you are. For example, business cards will work better overall for mobile/wedding DJs while promo CDs will work better for those that are trying to make the circuit.

With that being said, let’s take a look through some of the ways you can promote yourself as a DJ.

DJ business cards

Do you need a business card for DJing? Some of you actually do.

As mentioned earlier, not all DJs will need a set of business cards but for those that treat their DJing as an actual business, such as mobile and wedding DJs, it’s important to get a set so you can hand them out at networking events and to potential clients.

A DJ business card should have the essentials:

Name

Contact information

Simple description of what you do

The best business cards are often the most minimal. There’s no need to go super extravagant by adding in a paragraph of text; this only distracts the potential client – just get them the basic information.

Use every opportunity to pass out business cards. If you’re playing at a party, leave a stack on the DJ booth for people to pick up. Hand out your business cards to people that come up to talk. Slip a few into the gift baskets at weddings.

Your business card is your chance to hook people so you can tell them more about your services. Don’t try to make the sale up front, wait for people to call or email you; then begin to setup some form of business.

Promo mixes on Youtube

As I touched on before with creatineg a tenminmix, Youtube can be a great way to promote your mixes and your persona.

Creating a video is very simple, requiring only a pocketful of money to sport for a video camera but if you want to go simple, you can always just record your mixes and place it to a picture.

Youtube recently included a simple video editor which covers the basics of editing the front and back of your video which should be fine if you’re doing a consistent mix.

However, the main benefit you can gain from Youtube is when you can show yourself. Since many promoters and viewers are also looking for personality, being on camera can have very powerful effects to your promotion.

After you’ve uploaded a video, be sure to add it to your own blog or website. Try to get your friends to embed the video or share it on your Facebook page.

Make sure you also set a download link so people can snag your mix and listen at a later time. Just name the file with your name and possibly contact details like email address so people can contact you at a later time.

Another bonus is if you take your video and use Tubemogul to distribute the video across the net on dozens of other video websites.

Here’s a few resources to get started with video:

Creating promo videos for Youtube

Putting your mix in the cloud

Want a truly powerful way to promote your DJing? Try hosting it on various mixing websites such as Mixcloud.

The user base for many of these websites consist of highly passionate music fans which will share your mixes with others. Additionally, users can easily embed mixes right into other websites so their community will find your mix, starting the process all over again – promoting the hell out of you!

With your mix now hosted in the cloud, you can also link to it within your Facebook, Myspace, forum and other various web profiles around the net. The more you can place your link, the more chances people will find you.

Make a truly amazing mix and your link will spread virally; thousands will come to listen and recognize your name. Who knows, maybe a promoter or club owner catches wind of you and gets you on board.

Creating a promo CD

Are tapes and CDs the thing of the past? Well, maybe tapes but CDs can still certainly do wonders to promote yourself as a DJ.

Although you can greatly benefit of using online websites and services, you can’t hand out an MP3 at parties and events. At these parties, your CD can be land in the hands of many people.

When playing your mix, just like business cards, leave a stack of CDs for people to come up and grab. Whenever your mix is breaking down, throw a couple promo CDs to the crowd. Also remember to chat with people afterward and slip them a CD – all additional ways of promoting your mixing.

The mix is the most important part of your promo CD. Don’t make it too long because people don’t have all the time in the world but not too short either.

The design of the promo CD can also play a large role. Although the mix is the most important part, an attractive design will get people intrigued and egg them to pick it up and hold onto it.

If you have questions about how to record your DJ mix to MP3 to later be burnt to a CD, check out these resources:

Build your social network

Want to know the best way to promote yourself as a DJ in this day and age? Social media.

Yup. Faceboo, Myspace, Twitter plus the thousands of other social websites – you have to get out there and spread your mixes like a wildfire.

Start with your friends, ask for them to tweet, like and share your mixes with their friends.

From there, reach out to other people on this network but without being spammy – cause no one likes getting those random invites from people they have no idea who they are.

If possible, remember the names of people you meet at parties, friend them and accept their friend requests. Build your online brand, promote, promote, promote.

The more followers and friends you get (in a non spammy way) the more chances your mixes will be spread across the net. Additionally, others will see that you’re starting to take off and take notice; this is the idea behind building a tribe around yourself.

Building word-of-mouth buzz

Word-of-mouth is still a great way to promote yourself as a DJ; this is done primarily through one method: creating a kickass set of mixes.

People don’t want to talk about DJs that don’t bring the ruckus so it’s imperative that you give them something worth talking about.

Try out new tricks, throw down raw tracks, surprise people and blow their socks off whenever you mix.

If you did it right, people will talk to their friends about your mix. Burn it to CD and listen to it in the car. Tell others whenever they are asked what DJs they recommend.

Get into the minds of your fans!

Although these tips are aimed at business, you should take these into consideration as your DJing is essentially just that:

16 things you can do yourself to create word-of-mouth for your business

How to create buzz with word-of-mouth marketing

Signup for DJ related websites or create your own

With a website, you have two things available to you:

Create your own website

Join a DJ community

The first, creating your own website, is the most powerful because you can brand every aspect. You can add tons of images, upload whatever you want, talk about whatever and keep everything all in one area.

Alternatively, if you join DJ websites, the large existing community will be a great starting point to promote yourself as a DJ. These websites have thousands of other DJs and fans of the music constantly searching for new music and people to connect with.

If you’re particularly tech savvy, you could build your own website with resources from Smashing Magazine or using templates on ThemeForest.

Definitely try starting with Mix.DJ and work your way from there – with over 100k members, it’s a great place to start.

Going old school: flyer’s and posters

A previous post here on BeginnerDJ talked about promoting clubs with flyers; much in the same, you an use these same tactics to promote yourself as a DJ.

You can get a huge stack of flyer’s for a few bucks or print your own.

Distribute the hell out of these all over the place. Pin em to the wall, hand them out at parties, leave a stack at local events.

The limits are endless – just use your imagination.

Check out UPrinting.com or VistaPrint for online companies that can print your flyers. They’re cheap and will have your order ready fairly quick.

Try out advertising: online and offline

If you’re really wanting to spread your promotion like crazy (and not afraid to spend a bit of money) you can try your hand at online and offline advertising.

Although it’s a little risky – it’s also platforms that not many DJs are jumping into.

Google Adwords doesn’t cost a whole ton and because not as many people are bidding on keywords related to your mixing the cost is going to be fairly low.

You may also want to try out radio ads or even TV ads but at that level, you’re probably going to want to have an actual business for weddings; something where you’re going to be making a big sum of money per investment.

Here’s a few reads to get you started with online advertising:

2 books to help you learn DJ promotion

There are written books on the subject of creating a successful DJ business including a ton of different ways to promote yourself – gasp! real books!

These are definitely worth your while:

Why promotion is key for successful DJs

There is a great argument of content vs. marketing. In terms of DJing, there are clear benefits of being able to promote yourself – you get to reach a larger audience.

This doesn’t mean that your mix has to be lacking; you need to put your best effort into creating a memorable mix before you spend all your money and time to promote yourself as a DJ.

Once your mixing is down, use your time wisely with many of these tips to begin promoting yourself and your mix.

Take each step at a time; start with one of these techniques, master it and begin working on the next.

Each of them work well together: creating a promo CD and handing it out with business cards, etc, etc.

Once your word is out there, start the process all over again with a new mix. Build, build, build.

And when you’re on the top, give a shout out to Beginner DJ.

Flyers are still a great way to promote a party. The more people you can pass them to, the better your chances are at bringing people out to your next DJ gig or party.

Flyers are a staple to club and party information. Now with the net, there aren’t nearly as many people standing outside the clubs shoving flyers in your hands but it’s still a major way many clubs promote their next party.

If you happen to land one of these party promoter jobs, you have yourself quite the job cut out for you. Not only will you need to deal with generally snotty people that don’t want any of your shit but you’ll also be expected to bring people in or it’s game over for you.

Passing out flyers is still a great way for individuals DJs to promote themselves as well, but do you know how to? There’s nothing quite like getting right up in someone’s face, telling them to come out and listen to you spin – that’s dedication!

This post is going to cover a few ways you can promote a party with flyers.

Mass Dropping On People

The obvious way of promoting a party with flyers is to stand outside of clubs just as they’re getting out so you can pass them to party-goers as they are leaving. This will give them heads up on the next party, right when they’re still in the party mode and ripping to check out something soon.

The best approach is to try to strike up a conversation. People hate it when you just jab flyers into their hands, it also results in them tossing it to the ground moments later. If you can get them generally interested in music or what their next plans are, you’ll have a better shot at having them hold onto your flier.

When you show up to clubs and parties, be prepared. Bring a couple thousand flyers and start handing them to everyone. Even though a vast majority will throw them away or forget about them, you’ll still get a percentage that will come out.

The more people you can get your flyer into their hands, the more chances you have at promoting your party – simple as that.

Drop Em At Shops

If you’re hanging around the club district of your city, there’s bound to be music shops where many people frequent. Swing by and ask if you can throw down a stack of flyers, you’ll generally get a yes. Each person that passes through the shop will get a glance at the party, especially if you can set it right up next to the counter.

You can also try out other shops that party-goers frequent, maybe hookah lounges, bars and even other clubs.

Just be careful though, some shop owners will get a little pissy because they don’t want you to just drop off a stack of waste. It’s within their interest to keep their customers, not have them run off to some club so be warned.

Bomb The Car Lot

You know those parking lots right outside of the club, around the corner? That’s your target.

When the parking lot attendant isn’t watching, run up to every car and start placing them in the windows, under the whipers, between the doors and any other place you can fit them on.

Generally this approach is dickish, I don’t think I’ve ever went to a party that placed a flier on my car, it more annoyed me and drove me away from it. But, there will be people that throw it in and pick it up later, perhaps coming out.

Just be careful when you’re bombing cars with your party flyers, if you don’t notice some dude sitting in his car when you slap your flier down, you could end up getting your ass busted and bruised.

Ninja That Shit

If you’re particularly crafty, you can set up your flyers in excellent spots that people will have to look. Places that work pretty well are right on the ATMs as clubbers are pulling out more cash for booze. Other places would be where groups of people end up smoking or chill out afterward.

You gotta ninja this shit.

Try to be sneaky with your promotion, place your flyers right where they never expect it so when they do catch it, they can’t help but read it.

Bathrooms are great because when you’re stuck in front of a urinal, you gotta look forward – boom, your flier.

Pole Job

The lamp posts and other poles are general areas that are accepted in many cities to post party flyers. Many times it’s the only place that you can post without getting busted.

Every post you swing by, slap another flier up, wrap it up in tape and cover up the other promotions – you’re there to get people, not let them run off to some other club or party.

When people pour out of the clubs at last call, they’ll be standing around for a while, chilling out. They’ll end up reading your flyers as they sober up or try to find their drunk friends.

Hunt The Groups

Generally you’ll have a good advantage if you can single out groups. People will take shit from you even if they don’t want it, that’s why people pass out stuff all the time when you’re walking out a store for fundraiser and other things you have no interest in.

The trick is to spot groups that you can run up on and pick out the person that seems the most succeptible to grabbing your flier. Try to pick out groups that are chattering a lot, they might end up looking over your flier and talking about it with their friends.

Grow Some Tits

Sorry guys but you know how it goes, people are more likely to accept something random from a girl than some dumpy looking dude trying to promote a party.

If you can pay someone, you’ll be off to a good start.

Try to get some girls to promote your party for you, give em a few bucks to do so. You’ll be able to tackle those group of guys, especially if they throw some spin about how they’ll catch them at the party – even though they won’t.

Add Incentives

A lot of clubs pass out free drinks and cover cards. If you can get a nice stack, try to give them out to people as you pass out your flyers.

You’ll be much more likely to get more people to come when they know they’ll get a couple beers or shots for free.

Be Annoying…But Cool

Don’t be the dick that shoves the flyers in people’s hands. If they don’t want it, don’t bother trying over and over with them, just move onto the next person.

A lot of these tricks are dickish but they will get people to come out to the parties.

You can expect that out of a hundred or so flyers you pass out, only a few people will end up coming out. With that being said, it’s simple math, the more people you can get your flyers to, the more people you’ll have coming out.

When you combine this with promotions online and building an email list, you’ll really begin to get some leverage on the local party scene.
