Out of all the computer DJ programs available for mixing, there are only a three computer DJ programs that make the cut. To be a master at mixing, you need the correct DJ program to make sure you can use your skills to the best of your ability.

The following are the top 3 computer DJ programs for mixing.

Traktor

Traktor is a powerful DJ program provided by Native Instruments. You are able to buy it separately or can buy it bundled with a variety of DJ equipment such as Traktor Scratch Pro.

This piece is equipment is very powerful and is quickly become one of the most used piece of DJ programs. It’s really a no-brainer because Native Instruments have a very long track record for creating fantastic software synths and electronic music related programs.

One of the main draws of Traktor is the ability to utilize the traktor scratch controller box. This box allows you to hook up turntables and route them to Traktor, giving you a ton of control.

If two turntables arent’ enough, Traktor lets you bump it up to 4 decks – talk about layering like a madman.

Check out some of the features of Traktor:

Four track playback

Full effects and EQ

Tons of looping features

Built in effects

Pick up a copy of Traktor from Amazon here

Ableton

Ableton is a power house for modern DJs that want to combine the ability to mix tracks and produce their own music.

Ableton’s main draw comes from the ability to go beyond just mixing tracks as you would with a crossfader and decks. Ableton gives you the power to combine audio processing through loops, vsts and other built in effects to create a mix on the fly however you want.

Combine with a midi controller, Ableton lets you easily beatmatch, cut up tracks, resample and record your DJ mix.

Purchase a copy of Ableton Live from Amazon here

VirtualDJ

Virtual DJ makes the last of this list because it’s one of the most easily accessible DJ programs for the computer.

Although it’s not nearly as extensive as Traktor or Ableton, Virtual DJ still provides you with a ton of features and everything you need to get started with DJing.

With Virtual DJ, you can use a midi controller, external decks or your mouse to control your mix. The interface is simple and has the essentials to build a mix – no frills to distract you.

Virtual DJ is packaged with many midi controllers or if you plan to buy it separately, it won’t make a dent in your wallet.

Others To Consider

Before you make a comment about the other DJ programs I skipped out talking about, I want to also mention that Torq, MixMeister and MixVibes are all great DJ programs.

The top 3 DJ programs continue to evolve simply because they are so well known and backed by their companies. If you go with one of these, you can be sure that you’ll stay ahead of the curve on DJ technology.

Plug in your midi controller, connect your decks or make some mouse clicks and you’ll be building your DJ mix in no time.

Since the birth of Electronic Music, we’ve seen many genres and subgenres arise and fall. Although it’s difficult to place your finger on exactly what many genres truly are, many have pushed the electronic sound to new soundscapes.

The following are obscure electronic music genres you’re not ready for. Prepare for your ears to bleed, head to get dusted and your chest to cave in.

Speedcore

What happens when you take a drum machine and PCP at the same time? Speedcore. Not for everyone, speedcore is insanely fast and almost unbearable at times but always there to bring the ruckus.

Psytekk

Psytrance is beloved by many trancers but what about those that want a minimal/techno beat? This is where Psytekk comes into play. Combining psychadelic sounds, minimal beats and breakbeat breakdowns, Psytekk is a great mixture of sounds.

Schranz

Schranz is a combination of hard trance and hard techno. This hardcore hails from the germanic tribes of well, Germany – where else right? If you’re looking for a great sound to itch that hard spot, this is the genre for you.

Glitch

Who needs rythmic beats when you can just glitch the hell out of them, creating sounds that rip into your mind. Glitch has seen a rise over the years but still is at its tipping point.

Feedback Noise IDONTKNOWWHATTHEHELLITIS

Here’s a musical genre for ya: take droning feedback loops and play the for hours on end. What do you get? Well, feedback loops. For hours. Surprisingly, some of it is good.

SpaceSynth/Italo Disco

For a short while, Disco was still kickin in Europe (in some ways, it still is). Disco died in America but the Europeans kept running with it and gave us spacesynth and italo disco. These genres are nearly interchangable, the main differences being the space samples.

That’s Some Weird Sh*t!

Every year, especially due to the internet, we’ve seen sub genres of sub genres rise from the depth of the internet. There’s no telling where music will go in the future due to the ease of musical instruments available to all.

Bedroom and beginner DJs around the world are utilizing Youtube to shine and show their mixing skills by uploading a ten minute mix of their best work.

There’s a phenomenon going around the web which is allowing the bedroom DJ to arise from the ranks and cement their place as a force to be reckoned with.

What am I talking about? The 10 minmix on Youtube. I’m sure you’ve seen a few but have you ever considered the impact it’s been creating within the DJ community?

Bedroom and beginner DJs around the world are utilizing Youtube to shine and show their mixing skills by uploading a ten minute mix of their best work.

Want to do the same? Read on…

Introducing The TenMinMix

10 minutes, that’s all the time you’ve got to show your best work. Doesn’t sound like enough time? You’d be surprised because it’s becoming one of the best methods for beginner DJs to show off their skills in mixing.

Yes, 10 minutes doesn’t give you a lot of time to dig deep into your music collection but it will hold the attention of many viewers that will watch your video over and over again.

Want a perfect example?

Whoa-B created a 10 minute mix of Dubstep which has now reached well over 1 million views. Beat that!

But why does it work so well? Internet users want bite sized content, they’re in for a quick fix, many people don’t have time to listen to a 1 or 2 hour mix. The ten minute mix is the perfect allotted time for people to get into the music without the heavy emotional investment of listening for hours on end.

There’s Plenty Of Room To Show Off

Think of your ten minute mix as an elevator pitch. You only have a few minutes to show off your skill before someone bounces to the next video. You’re going to need to pull some crazy tricks out your ass to keep them engaged.

Even within 10 minutes, you have enough time to throw in a handful of tracks. Don’t let the tracks ride out, switch it up constantly, throw on effects and your own personal flare.

Include A Download Link

Want to really get people to know your name? Include a download like so people can save your mix, put it on their mp3 player, send it to others and save it for the future.

Use websites like RGhost, ZShare and Rapidshare to upload the mix – or check out these 7 file sharing websites to upload your DJ mix. For bonus points, put your mix on a website which pays you every time someone downloads. Just think, if 1 million people watched Whoa-B’s mix and only 10% of them downloaded from the link, you could pull in a nice bit of side income.

Check out this post about getting paid to upload files.

How To Record Your 10 Minute Mix

Got a web cam? Probably. If not, invest some money in a quality video camera or high definition webcam.

Microsoft actually makes a very inexpensive HD webcam for just over $50 called the LifeCam. Set up your camera to record your set, spin and upload directly to Youtube.

With the advances and inexpensiveness of technology, you should be kicking yourself in the ass for not taking advantage of this great opportunity to promote yourself.

Socialize It

It’s hard to get someone to download your set or even visit a streaming service. However, people are inclined to check out an actual video of your mixing.

Video isn’t going away, every day more people are watching videos over reading and listening to web content. It’s passive content.

Jump on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites, share your links, embed them everywhere you go. You want to promote yourself don’t you?

Bonus points if you upload your video elsewhere using Tubemogul. This services lets you blast your video to dozens of other video websites and even lets you track to see how many people are watching.

What You Can Take Away From All This

Think of your tenminmix as the perfect portfolio piece. Want to impress a club owner? Skip the demo mix and shoot them an email with your video that now has a million views. I bet that’ll get their attention.

Hell, create a series of videos. Ask your watchers and subscribers what kind of mix they’d like to hear. Every week throw up a new video for people to watch and promote. You can be that person that has a regular show on Youtube.

Don’t wait for it, the time is now. Get on Youtube and start mixing.

Got a tenminmix to share? Post it in the comments below.

I’ve saved the best for last – you’ll love this one.

LoopLaps is a website/company that makes some very impressive mixing and music production applications that are fully available online – and free!

There are currently 3 applications:

The Music Studio

Dubstep Studio

Electro-House Blender

Each of these follow the same premise: give you a workspace, drag and drop samples and create your own songs and mixes.

These music applications give you a real boost of creativity, especially if you’ve never tried making your own music.

Instead of downloading tons of samples or extensive programs, the applications by LoopLabs let you jump right into the mix and start playing around, making your own music.

This stuff is really fun.

The interface is really slick and gives you a lot of control over your song creation.

Combine this with a really cool community that shares and votes on different submitted mixes and you’ve got a helluva good time.

Just Wastin’ Time

These online music applications can really help you pass some time if you are bored or if you’re getting a creative stint where you don’t feel like mixing on your decks.

The communities are what really makes these applications cool, everyone is fairly helpful and make some really good music for the scope of each.

If you’ve got some time, I suggest starting with LoopLabs, you’ll have a lot of fun.

Have you found any online music applications?

Do you know what type of music you want to begin DJing? It's easier to pick the genre of music you want to DJ than you think, find out how.

We all have our own taste in music but we have a tougher choice when we decided which music to DJ. Depending on your location, you may be stuck with a particular style because of the acceptance of different genres of music. You may also be trapped into pigeonholed genres because of the avilability of music.

So this raises a very important question that many beginner DJs have: what music should I DJ?

I can’t make that decision for you but I will give you a few helpful tips and suggestions to help find which music is best for you.

Play What You Love

First and foremost, you should DJ the music you love. You know, the music you can’t live without, the tracks that play through your speakers day in and day out.

If you aren’t DJing the music you love, you’re probably going after the money – this is the wrong way to do it. DJing is part love of the music and dedication to give people a good time.

When you play music you don’t love, you won’t have the heart to continue with it. Night and day, you’ll be stuck listening to music you don’t really care for just because you’re comfortable with a residency at a club.

It’s important to play music for your fans and the party-goers but when you truly love the music you DJ, you’ll be able to explore deeper into the musical genre to pull those gems that people will go crazy for.

A great DJ will choose to play music which will inspire them – something you can’t find when you don’t love it.

Playing What’s Available

Some DJs are <a href="http://www.beginnerdj.com/how-to-choose-which-type-of-dj-you-will-be-music-format"title="restricted by the area they are stuck in" >restricted by the area they are stuck in. If you are in a part of the country that has a high following for Drum and Bass, you’ll probably have a tough time breaking onto the scene by playing Italo Disco.

Likewise, you’ll have a hard time breaking through this barrier because many local shops won’t be carrying the music you want to play for people.

There really isn’t an excuse to be limited by your physical location. With so many shops available online to buy music, you can literally find every genre by thousands of producers.

If you’re really having a hard time getting into the local mix, perhaps it’s time you move from your area and find greener destinations. Follow what you love, that’s the music you should DJ.

Start With Something Familiar Or Easy

When we rush into DJing, the first thing we do is start playing the tracks we are familiar with. The only problem with this approach is that it’s hard to get a good feel for beatmatching when we practice on obscure genres that you and your friend listens to.

This is why many people recommend starting off by practicing with House and other simpler forms of Electronic Music. These simple tracks give you a thorough understanding of breaking up a beat, beatmatching it and spinning you first mix.

When you ask what music I should DJ, you should remember that you need to start somewhere. You always have time to move onto the genres of music that are more difficult to mix.

Mix What You’ve Got

Another point to note is that you should really be using your money to invest in great gear, not dropping a load of money on music right away. Music can come at a later point but getting your first DJ setup up and running is essential.

Most of us already have a very extensive collection of music on our hard drives or sitting around in our crates. Save that $50 you want to run out and drop on a fat stack of vinyl towards a decent pair of headphones, practice with what you have for now so you can see what type of music you want to DJ.

Once you feel out the music you enjoy mixing the most, then go out and start grabbing up those hot and obscure tracks.

What Type Of DJ Do You Want To Be?

This is another important question to ask yourself. If you are planning to be a mobile or wedding DJ, you may be stuck playing Top 40 hits – it’s what people are expecting and know.

Dropping that dark electro track during a wedding will probably get you a lot of blank stares. If you know <a href="http://www.beginnerdj.com/the-types-of-djs"title="what type of DJ you plan to be" >what type of DJ you plan to be you can start to figure out what music you’ll DJ.

Build your collection to what will help you support your DJ career. If you’re a wedding DJ, stick to buying the Top 40 tracks people will request – not dropping it on that rare white label wax you’ve been eyeballing for the last month.

Just Feel It Out

A lot of beginner DJs jump right into mixing with their favorite genres or ones people suggest to practice mixing and beatmatching. This is fine, as noted in the example above but over time you’ll find that even your favorite genre may not be your favorite to mix.

Even though you may really enjoy listening to Psytrance, you may find that mixing Minimal is more enjoyable and gives you more freedom as a DJ. When you decide which music you want to DJ, pick one that is going to push your skills but also give you enough wiggle room to play around and wow people.

If you can practice and learn to mix with many differnet genres, you’ll become a very versitile DJ that can play at a variety of venues. You no longer have to debate which type of music you want to DJ, you’ll just get up on the decks and start mixing whatever’s coming at you.

“In Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, music journalists Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton have written the first comprehensive history of the mysterious and charismatic figure behind the turntables — part obsessive record collector, part mad scientist, part intuitive psychologist of the party groove.”

“From England’s rabid Northern Soul scene to the birth of disco in New York, from the sound systems of Jamaica to the scratch wars of early hip-hop in the Bronx, from Chicago house to Detroit techno to London rave, DJs are responsible for most of the significant changes in music over the past forty years.”

1. How to DJ Right: The Art and Science of Playing Records

“Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton’s Last Night a DJ Saved My Life was the definitive history of the DJ. Now they gather their mastery of the artistic and technical aspects of being a DJ into a clear, accessible, and entertaining guide.”

“How to DJ is the perfect guide — from the most basic keys to establishing a music collection and a distinctive sound, to elementary record-spinning, to the complex skills of scratching, hot-mixing, and beat-juggling, as well as the inimitable art of creating an evening of sound that is perfectly timed, balanced, and unforgettable.”

5 More Additional Tips To Survive Ultra Music Festival

Just to make sure I cover everything before you head off to Ultra Music Festival, I decided to make another post about some tips and tricks.

Some of these are common sense but we always end up forgetting some essential things right as we get there.

1. Stock Up On Cigarettes

If you’re a smoker, there’s nothing worse than running out of cigs right in the middle of the party.

Make sure you bring an extra pack or two because you’re sure to have people bumming off you during the party.

In some scenarios, you’ll also be able to trade them for booze and other supplies to people that are really craving.

2. Don’t Eat The Crab Cakes

I learned my lesson last year, don’t eat at random convenient stores in the middle of the night.

The combination of the 32 oz. warm Natty Ice and warm crab cakes made me throw up all over the road before the second party.

Later I reasoned that they had been sitting in the open because every other thing in the fridge was just as warm.

My friend lucked out, he ended up tossing his nasty beef patties after the first bite.

Long story short, stick to real food – not stuff from some cracked out convenient store.

3. There’s A Lot Of Douchebags and Bitches

Although this is a huge electronic music festival, it always pulls out some really douchie and bitchy people.

These are the people that basically go to socialize and take pictures while making stupid faces.

I don’t always have a problem with these people but the worst is when their posse of 20+ people decide to plow through a crowd to get to the front – stepping on everyone and elbowing.

The worst part is that they generally don’t dance. Now you have people standing around you, giving you the stink eye, for having your own fun.

Just ignore em.

4. You’re Going To See And Experience Weird Shit

A lot of people that listen to Electronic Music are already pretty unique and weird at times but this seems to bring out the people that really went over the edge.

Be prepared to see some people in really odd get ups, going crazy out of their skulls, passing out, throwing up, starting fights and all the other great things about parties.

I’m sure you’re already acceptable to these people but it’s just a heads up.

5. Not All DJ’s Are Good – Explore!

Even though you see some of the big name DJ’s, don’t stick to one stage. There are tons of smaller stages with relatively unknown DJ’s at time that put on a helluva show.

Go check out some of the back areas and music you don’t normally listen to.

You can’t always expect to hear a great set from a big named DJ either. Sometimes they put on shitty shows. Go have fun with the music you want to listen to, not with whose DJing.

Bonus Tip: The Security And Everyone Aren’t Helpful

Besides taking your money, the people that work at the event are in the business mode. They aren’t going out of their way to be friendly unless it’s people they know or you somehow run into someone genuine.

Last year my friend almost passed out from heat exhaustion, so we asked the paramedics if they could give him some air and water. What did they say? No, go buy some.

Unfortunately, we ran out of money early in the night. I know it’s our fault that it happened but basically no one will help you until you’re really messed up.

Drink lots of water….and beer.

Okay, so that wraps up my final round of tips and tricks about Ultra Music Festival.

Believe me, you’re going to have a blast.

You will have some times that are really weird or uncomfortable but it all builds the bigger picture – have fun!

Much like last year, I ran into a few problems along the way that almost ruined my chance to go to Ultra Music Festival. The main problem, which I’m sure many have experienced, has been problems ordering their tickets online.

I figure this post should clear up a few things about grabbing your Ultra Music Festival tickets.

1. Tickets Not Processing Online

Last year I had the same problem as I did this year, every time I tried to order tickets I woulds see an error message.

The worst part about this credit card error message is that it locks your account. Once your account has been locked, you need to send an email to support or call them to have them remove it.

Most often it’s trouble with the billing address.

For some reason it had a hard time accepting my P.O. Box as my billing address, taking a few extra days to finally be able to order the tickets.

2. Call Support – They’re Helpful

If you are having any problem ordering your Ultra Music Festival tickets, don’t bother sending an email because it takes far too long; give support a phone call.

You’ll only wait a few minutes but once you’re through, you should be able to explain any problems you have.

The best part is that you can clear up any hold on your card and if they’re feeling particularily helpful, they’ll bypass it and allow the system to accept your info.

3. Don’t Forget Your I.D.’s

Unless you have your physical tickets, you’ll need to do a Will Call.

A will call means you show up at the venue, get in line and show your receipt, I.D. and the credit card you use to buy the tickets.

Without your I.D. and credit card, you’re pretty screwed so make sure you bring them.

4. You Can Always Buy At The Venue

For those that are getting a little anxiouss about not buying online, you can still buy tickets at the main entrance.

Yes, they will be a little extra but at least you don’t have to worry about how you’re going to go to UMF.

5. In Case Of Emergency – Scalp

There are tons of scalpers running around the area selling extra tickets.

Usually you can find a good deal but if you’re really strapped to get in, you may pay a bit more.

These scalpers generally buy a load of tickets during presale when they are cheap, then sell them the day of the events for double.

6. Keep Your Tickets Safe

If you got the 2 day General Admission pass to UMF, you’re going to be carrying around your extra ticket.

Make sure you keep it in a really safe spot. I don’t suggest carrying it on you just incase you get pick pocketed. Instead, run back to your car and stash it in the glove box or somewhere where people won’t look for it.

7. One Credit Card Per Purchase

The biggest gripe I have with buying tickets online is that you can only use your credit card once.

If a friend decides to come later, you can’t use that same card so either they will need one or you’re stuck buying it at the gates or scalping.

8. They Generally Don’t Check I.D.’s

After you get your tickets, all the people at the front entrance will do is rip them and tell you to go in.

Although there are names printed on the tickets, they don’t care; this is how scalpers can sell them.

There is no reentry so make sure you bring everything in with you!

9. Don’t Keep Processing Your Tickets!

I found this out the hard way.

If you keep trying to order your tickets and keep getting the error message, you will be deducted the full amount in your bank account for a temporary period.

I looked at my balance today only to see that I was -$240. I had to call the people to see what’s up and they basically said they hold the fee until it’s processed.

If the charge doesn’t go through, they will eventually reimburse you. Unfortunately, you’ll need to check with your bank to make sure they don’t overdraft you.

If you are overdrafted, you can call support and they’ll help clear it up.

Hopefully you don’t run into any of these troubles and get right in. If you do, just take some time to clear everything up with support. If you can’t, you can still buy tickets at the venue.

Here’s some music that has been ringing in my ears this week.

Twist – Maniac (MelloTheque Remix)

This tune has been on loop for hours now, it’s such a killer tune.

Genre: Dubstep

Videos

What’s a good #MusicMonday post without video?

Tokyo/Glow

This video reminds me of Life In Loops. I love watching time lapses of big cities and being Tokyo, it’s the best.

7th Heaven – Pot Smoking Episode

This video is funny as hell, why is it such a huge deal? Ohhh silly people.

Articles

Here are some great articles that were found over the last week.

Kryptic Minds and Loefah Interview: January 2009

Kryptic Minds is one of my buds favorite dubstep producers. This interview speaks volumes about them plus there is an exclusive mix.

http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/2009/05/kryptic-minds-and-loefah.html

Cool Sites

A collection of some cool sites to check out about electronic music and more.

Cosmic Disco

I’ve had Cosmic Disco on my RSS feed for some time now so it has to have a mention.

There are always great disco mixes available here, really nice when you feel like listening to some old, funky music.

Also, there are some really great interviews, guides and other articles to read over there, definitely worth checking out.

Here’s another amazing website I’ve had on RSS for some time. This website regularly posts podcast of some of the great names within the psychedelic world. You can spend hours on hear listening to some very amazing talks and interviews.

http://www.matrixmasters.net/blogs/
