Coming right atcha, here are 3 more movies about raves you should check out. You've already seen the top 10 rave movies, well here are a few more.

Without a doubt my previous post, the top 10 rave movies of all time, was quite the success. Although it doesn’t teach you how to DJ or cover DJ equipment, people still really enjoy reading and discovered what I believed to be the best rave movies.

After some feedback, I think it’s time to cover a few more rave movies worth your time. I’ll say this up front, some of these aren’t the best but they’re still entertaining.

Hollywood does a hit and miss job representing a lot of cultures, rave movies are no exception to this rule (think Jaws, and then think Jaws 3D).

Okay, enough rambling, let’s get on with the list.

1. Party Monster

Party Monster stars Seth Green and Macaulay Culkin, you know those guys from Home Alone and Austin Powers?

The basis of the movie is that Macauly Culkin’s character, Michael Alig, travels to New York City and runs into Seth Green’s character, James St. James, where he teaches him all about how to be fabulous.

Well, the movie gets weird really really fast. Everything starts to go into a trippy, tranny lovefest where both the characters run around to clubs and parties.

I don’t want to spoil the movie but it gets to the point where some really heavy stuff happens between the characters, everything goes wonky. Oh, and lot’s more cross dressing.

This movie, the first time, was pretty horrid but then it became genius. It’s a bit like Rocky Horror, it has this cult vibe to it. I definitely recommend checking it out.

You can buy Party Monster here.

2. The 51st State aka Formula 51

Formula 51 stars none other than snake killing, mushroom cloud laying Samuel L. Jackson as Elmo McElroy – a master chemist (who’s Scottish).

Elmo creates a new super drug, POS 51, which 51 times as potent as ecstacy, opiates, amphetamines and cocaine. Because Elmo is working for none other than Meatloaf, err I mean The Lizard, he’s commissioned to make the drug for the crime syndicate.

Sam Jackson, as you’d expect, said “F@CK THAT” and bolted, taking the formula with him.

The rave aspect comes in as he decides to do a test run on a club, which is a great scene as lazers, music and people go absolutely crazy.

This movie is pretty bad ass, I’d say grab it up immediately.

You can buy Formula 51 here.

3. A Midsummer Night’s Rave

A Midsummer Night’s Rave is a modern take on A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream – at a rave.

The movie is just too poppy for me, it has a lot of decent scenes in it but every one of the characters are vapid and annoying. It’s worth watching if you want to see raves depicted in movies.

I’d say definitely rent this one instead, you’ll get a kick out of it.

You can buy A Midsummer Night’s Rave here.

Only 3? WTF?

Yeah, I only went with 3 on this one because most of the other movies that deal with raves are more about electronic music, gear and the innovators – which I plan to post about soon enough

Hopefully this covered the last of the movies about raves. This now totals up 13 rave movies you should check out, that should fill up some time.

Okay, so what did I miss this time?

P.S. I added affiliate links for Amazon up there. If you end up buying them (I assumed you’ll just download em heh) I’ll get a commission which allows me to hold contests and other crazy shit – yeah!

Do you know what type of music you want to begin DJing? It's easier to pick the genre of music you want to DJ than you think, find out how.

We all have our own taste in music but we have a tougher choice when we decided which music to DJ. Depending on your location, you may be stuck with a particular style because of the acceptance of different genres of music. You may also be trapped into pigeonholed genres because of the avilability of music.

So this raises a very important question that many beginner DJs have: what music should I DJ?

I can’t make that decision for you but I will give you a few helpful tips and suggestions to help find which music is best for you.

Play What You Love

First and foremost, you should DJ the music you love. You know, the music you can’t live without, the tracks that play through your speakers day in and day out.

If you aren’t DJing the music you love, you’re probably going after the money – this is the wrong way to do it. DJing is part love of the music and dedication to give people a good time.

When you play music you don’t love, you won’t have the heart to continue with it. Night and day, you’ll be stuck listening to music you don’t really care for just because you’re comfortable with a residency at a club.

It’s important to play music for your fans and the party-goers but when you truly love the music you DJ, you’ll be able to explore deeper into the musical genre to pull those gems that people will go crazy for.

A great DJ will choose to play music which will inspire them – something you can’t find when you don’t love it.

Playing What’s Available

Some DJs are <a href="http://www.beginnerdj.com/how-to-choose-which-type-of-dj-you-will-be-music-format"title="restricted by the area they are stuck in" >restricted by the area they are stuck in. If you are in a part of the country that has a high following for Drum and Bass, you’ll probably have a tough time breaking onto the scene by playing Italo Disco.

Likewise, you’ll have a hard time breaking through this barrier because many local shops won’t be carrying the music you want to play for people.

There really isn’t an excuse to be limited by your physical location. With so many shops available online to buy music, you can literally find every genre by thousands of producers.

If you’re really having a hard time getting into the local mix, perhaps it’s time you move from your area and find greener destinations. Follow what you love, that’s the music you should DJ.

Start With Something Familiar Or Easy

When we rush into DJing, the first thing we do is start playing the tracks we are familiar with. The only problem with this approach is that it’s hard to get a good feel for beatmatching when we practice on obscure genres that you and your friend listens to.

This is why many people recommend starting off by practicing with House and other simpler forms of Electronic Music. These simple tracks give you a thorough understanding of breaking up a beat, beatmatching it and spinning you first mix.

When you ask what music I should DJ, you should remember that you need to start somewhere. You always have time to move onto the genres of music that are more difficult to mix.

Mix What You’ve Got

Another point to note is that you should really be using your money to invest in great gear, not dropping a load of money on music right away. Music can come at a later point but getting your first DJ setup up and running is essential.

Most of us already have a very extensive collection of music on our hard drives or sitting around in our crates. Save that $50 you want to run out and drop on a fat stack of vinyl towards a decent pair of headphones, practice with what you have for now so you can see what type of music you want to DJ.

Once you feel out the music you enjoy mixing the most, then go out and start grabbing up those hot and obscure tracks.

What Type Of DJ Do You Want To Be?

This is another important question to ask yourself. If you are planning to be a mobile or wedding DJ, you may be stuck playing Top 40 hits – it’s what people are expecting and know.

Dropping that dark electro track during a wedding will probably get you a lot of blank stares. If you know <a href="http://www.beginnerdj.com/the-types-of-djs"title="what type of DJ you plan to be" >what type of DJ you plan to be you can start to figure out what music you’ll DJ.

Build your collection to what will help you support your DJ career. If you’re a wedding DJ, stick to buying the Top 40 tracks people will request – not dropping it on that rare white label wax you’ve been eyeballing for the last month.

Just Feel It Out

A lot of beginner DJs jump right into mixing with their favorite genres or ones people suggest to practice mixing and beatmatching. This is fine, as noted in the example above but over time you’ll find that even your favorite genre may not be your favorite to mix.

Even though you may really enjoy listening to Psytrance, you may find that mixing Minimal is more enjoyable and gives you more freedom as a DJ. When you decide which music you want to DJ, pick one that is going to push your skills but also give you enough wiggle room to play around and wow people.

If you can practice and learn to mix with many differnet genres, you’ll become a very versitile DJ that can play at a variety of venues. You no longer have to debate which type of music you want to DJ, you’ll just get up on the decks and start mixing whatever’s coming at you.

Here is some of the music that's been stuck in my head for the last week, ARRRRRG!

Hey BDJ readers,

There’s been music stuck in my head for the last week, it’s driving me insane. No matter how many times I listen to a track, mix or album, I can’t get enough of it.

That’s why I want to add a new (occasional) section called Music Stuck In My Head (MSIMH) – eh? That’s a shitty acronym.

Anyway, here are some of the tracks and albums that have been pretty much on loop for the last week.

Who knows, maybe you’ll find some new artists that you like or some tracks that you can use for your DJ sets.

Let’s take a look:

Midi Miliz – Nonstandard (album)

My friend turned me onto Midi Miliz. Midi is sort of a minimal/psy act that pumps out really amazing music. The tracks aren’t too heavy but they send your brain through all kinds of loops.

For example, check out:

Reminiscing Acid House by Noyeahno (mix)

Reading through a few other blogs I stumbled across this Acid House mix on MixCloud.

I really wish I was old enough to experience Acid House but alas, I only get to listen to how it was – and man was it awesome!

You’ll notice quite a few artists on this list even if you weren’t a big Acid House head, others I’m sure you’ll know if you were.

Various Artists – Urban Forest (V.A. Album)

I found this one recently and it blows my mind all kinds of stupid. There are a few tracks that are hit and miss but the majority of it is raw.

This V.A. album has some really great Dark Psytrance tunes. I’ve had a bug up my ass about how recent Dark Psy has just been too polished and shitty but this took the words out of my mouth, it’s good to see artists still holding it down.

(Remember, if you love it – buy it!)
http://psyvisions.co.cc/album-va-urban-forest-2010/

Favorite track from this collection:

So that’s what’s been playing through my head all week. There are a ton more but this post doesn’t need to take an hour to read, I figure it’s best to keep it short and sweet.

Tell me what you think of ‘em and what’s been stuck in your head.

Beginner DJ explores the Pros and Cons of file sharing. How does it impact the DJ world? Read more and find out.

File sharing is the single greatest element of the internet, it has opened up new musical genres and artists that we may have never known.

Many people argue endlessly about the pros and cons of file sharing. Each side of the debate certain makes their point.

Beginner DJs often have the hard choice: buy or download their music.

The ability to quickly grab a track to spin is almost impossible to pass up but we’re always in conflict with our morals as music lovers.

Let’s explore further, the pros and cons of file sharing.

Pros Of File Sharing

Great Exposure To The Independent Artists

Without a doubt, the single greatest benefit of file sharing is the exposure independent artists can gain.

Without file sharing, many great artists would never have reached the success in which they enjoy today.

As a music lover, file sharing allows us to dive deeper into discovering new and old music. The further we go, the more obscure (and awesome) the music becomes.

The artists which fringe on the outside of the charts can finally begin to gain recognition for their great work, a definitive pro of file sharing.

Creative Control

Artists that decide to release their music on their own gains the ability to have complete creative control.

When most artists sign to a major record label, they give up a lot of their creative control such as ownership of their back catalog.

With file sharing, independent artists can release tracks for free and keep all of the rewards and spot light. The only downside of releasing your own music is that you don’t have the same promotional and marketing campaign that a major record label can produce.

Promotion aside, file sharing is the new form of music distribution. Artists can create work to their standards and creative flow, then share it with the world.

Setting Your Own Prices

Another great pro of file sharing is the ability for artists to set their own prices.

It’s hard to sell an album these days at the traditional price of $15 or so when we can easily go online and snag it for a few cents a track or completely free.

Artists that embrace file sharing can set their own prices and receive all the profit – instead of major labels taking a large cut.

Cons Of File Sharing

Some Artists Get Hurt

Unfortunately, not all file sharing can be good for certain artists.

Sure, most mainstream bands will complain when their new CD isn’t doing so well but when you have millions of fans, it makes up for it.

For the indie artist, if you have a stable fan base of 10,000 and the majority of them download your album, you’re pretty much SOL.

I am all for free music but I’m also for supporting artists. If the artists can’t make a living through their music (and it forces them back into the 9 to 5 life) we may never be able to hear great tracks from them again.

Some artists do get hurt, others take it in full stride, either way, sometimes file sharing can be a con.

It Hurts The Good Labels Too

Just like the artists, many great labels are hit hard by file sharing.

I don’t care if a major label goes down because they almost always release shit music but what I do care about are the indie labels that need the album to do well so they can keep going.

Recently Twisted almost sunk into bankruptcy due to file sharing. The newest Shpongle album was leaked early and crippled much of the overall sales. With Twisted so close to bankruptcy, it was do or die with the release.

Luckily the release was well received but many labels aren’t so lucky. Much like the artists, I find it’s important to support the music you love.

The Quality Often Sucks

The quality that I’m talking about isn’t the quality of music, it’s the quality of the format.

Most of the time MP3’s are incorrectly tagged, compressed to hell and are all kinds of disorganized.

With proper releases, you get full audio clarity, structure, art work and more. With file sharing, you get some song rip from a kid who encoded it at 128 – yuck!

The Perfect Balance Of File Sharing

It’s selfish for DJs to spin tracks they do not buy. You may argue that you’re giving the artist exposure but at the same time you are reaping all of the rewards by being paid to play an artist’s music you never bothered to buy.

DJs that don’t buy their tracks set up a vicious cycle in which the artist can no longer produce music regularily, in turn giving the DJ nothing to spin.

There is a perfect balance to this equation.

As a beginner DJ, if you do use illegal music, you should do your best to help promote and have others learn about the artists you spin.

With every mix you release, give a heads up to the listener to where they can find this music, identify the artist and help promote them as well.

Spinning free music is another great method where everyone benefits. Many artists release free music. Spinning this music and promoting the artist will keep the spirit alive.

We’ve all spun music we’ve downloaded through file sharing networks, that’s just a part of our internet culture now but whenever it’s possible, try to keep that perfect balance.

What do you think about file sharing?

Top music charts are a great way to find new music and see what is currently hot within the Electronic Music industry.

These top music charts are listed in print and online publications but what real purpose do they serve to the beginner DJ?

This post will look at some of the pros and cons of top music charts for DJing.

Pros Of Top Music Charts

See And Play What People Like

The most obvious reason why top music charts are important to many DJs is to see what people are currently listening to and enjoying.

Sure your set could be filled with underground tunes but many people that come out to party want to hear a few songs they recognize.

Playing that perfect hit at the right time will make a memorable night for both you and the party-goers.

Find New Artists

The top music charts is also a great way to find new music and artists.

No matter how hard we try, it’s simply impossible to keep up with such a high volume of music.

Top music charts allows us to find new music and artists we may normally not have the pleasure to in our free time.

Charts are a great way to begin learning about a new genre of music, starting with the well known artists and DJ’s then delving deeper into them.

There’s A Lot Of Good Music

There’s a reason why the music charts are used by so many DJ’s and fans – they generally show the best of the best.

The music that usually breaks the top music charts are songs people really love and are well produced, they deserve to be up there.

Cons Of Top Music Charts

It’s Stagnant

Top music charts often become stagnant as people continue to hold onto the music by the same DJ’s and artists.

Over and over again you see the same people appear in the music charts, regardless of how great a song is, it simply comes down to a popularity contest.

You never really get to find new and exciting music if you only stick to the top music charts as a beginner DJ.

It Makes You Dull

Beginner DJs that specifically stick to the top music charts are boring.

Music charts allow beginner DJs to play it safe. Sure they may please the crowd but there’s not really spectacular about their set.

Sticking to with the top of the music charts will mean your hardcore crowd begins to disperse and seek music elsewhere.

It’s best to do a balance of underground hits with top music hits, this will please the hardcore crowd while bringing in the usual crowd.

Music Bastardization

The main con of top music charts is that many of the artists that appear on the list have bastardized a much better example of that genre of music.

Not everyone wants to hear the grittiest, rawest tracks so when these producers create music that appeals to the masses, it doesn’t really give the tracks a whole lot of flavor.

Many top music chart DJ’s and artists seem to take away the sould of Electronic Music by only spinning the lightest and safe forms of the genres.

A Perfect Balance

There is a perfect balance between using music charts.

A beginner DJ should use charts to help select tracks they know will go over well with their crowd. In the meantime, the beginner DJ should mix in a few underground tracks to take care of the hardcore crowd.

This perfect balance of music charts and your own discoveries will help you bridge the gap between the two sides of partiers.

Never simply rely on the music charts to tell you what’s good, give each song a listen before you decide to play it. Not all music that shows up on the charts are good.

What do you think about music charts?

What's causing this surge of Pop and Hip Hop artists using elements of Electronic Music?

There’s been a question on my mind for the year or two that I can’t seem to get out of my head: is Electronic Music becoming popular?

I say this because when I flip on the radio, it seems like Pop and Hip Hop songs are increasingly using Electronic Music as their basis now.

But is this a good thing?

I never hold myself to any high standard or pretentiousness but in some ways, it’s sickening to hear how so many artists are using dirty Electro basslines, filter effects and 4/4 beats as their background music now.

The real stem of the problem is that it gives a false representation of the Electronic Music genres.

Every day I hear people exclaim “I love techno!” or “Electronica rocks!”. You know those old terms that even years ago were indicators that people really didn’t listen to a lot of Electronic Music?

These people lump all Electronic Music into one giant term.

Semantics aside, I think the question at hand popped up at last year’s Ultra Music Festival where Black Eye Peas took the main stage.

For whatever reason, I had to see this train wreck, at least for a minute.

What I saw was utter shit. Not only were play playing the most generic Electronic Music beats possible but people were actually falling all over themselves at how “awesome” the sound was.

To think, people listening to this generic bastardization of Electronic Music… at an Electronic Music festival!

So months go by and B.E.P released their album The E.N.D. It all went down hill from there.

Beside the fact that they were called out by Adam Freeland for stealing a part of his song, the entire album is this clash of cheesy Electronic Music effects that were used back in the 90s.

Fast forward months later and it seems that every Pop and Hip Hop song seems to have this same approach. This repetition of lyrics, gritty (but shitty) basslines, effects and remixes.

So what the hell is going on here? Has Electronic Music finally begun to be popular here in the states?

Over in the U.K. Electronic Music has been reaching Top 40 charts for quite some time but that’s a whole different story.

This new approach to these genres have stripped away the soul of what Electronic Music is just for a quick buck and a popular song.

Even radio DJ’s are getting in on it.

Nearly a decade ago there was a great station here in Florida which actually played a ton of Electronic Music. It wasn’t the deepest underground stuff but it still had its edge.

Now, after a considerable amount of time, we have 106.7 playing live mixes from a local club DJ. This would be fine and all but all he spins is the poppy Electronic tracks, you know, the “safe” ones that people that aren’t really into the style seem to go crazy for now.

Mix this with a constant barrage of air horns, spin backs and chatter about doing shots and we have ourselves one shitty mix.

So where does Electronic Music go from here?

I think we will see a surge in many artists using Electronic Music, wither it’s sampling or instruments, to make a lot of the popular music now.

It will never get to the point where a dark, speedy acid set makes it on radio play here so there’s something comforting knowing that there will always be an edgier side to Electronic Music.

I’m just not looking forward to hearing people go on and on about their bastardized Electronic Music.

Well, I guess that did come across as a bit snotty and pretentious but that’s because I love Electronic Music.

What about you?

How addicted to music are you?

DJ’s have a tough job, they have to listen to music all day, dig through crate after crate and play for rabid crowds at intense parties.

Sarcasm aside, I love listening to music which had me thinking today how much music should a DJ listen to in their everyday life?

To me, the more music you listen to everyday, the more opportunities you have to find new tracks to play. You also get to train your ears to the rhythm when you are listening intently.

DJing is, in some ways, like writing. The more a writer works on their work and reads, the better they become over time. Likewise, the more you practicing your mixing and devote time to listening to music, the better DJ you will become in the long run.

1. You Find New Music

When you listen to nothing but the radio all day, you never really dig deeper than what others think is good enough to listen to.

The net gives us all such a great opportunity to dig deeper into our favorite genre’s to find music we never heard.

Every day you can find new music that is deeper, rougher, dirty, perfect for your mixing.

Just the other day a friend sent over a few tracks that blew my mind, I never heard of them but after I gave them a listen I continued to dig deeper of what these artists had to offer – some truly amazing stuff.

As a beginner DJ, you should always be looking out for new and old tracks. Digging through crates and looking through the darkest parts of the net to find that exclusive track that no one else has heard of before.

2. It Trains Your Ears

One thing I like to do while listening to music is think of what it would be like if I was spinning the track.

If I am not listening for the enjoyment, I try to count along with the beat, think of different points when I can mix another track in, ways that I can remix and tweak the sound in my own mixing.

DJ sets are an amazing way to train your ear even when you’re not practicing. What I like to do is see if I can tell when the DJ begins to mix out a track into another or figure out what they are doing to make that unique, live remix of a track.

The more you listen, the more you begin to understand what others are doing with the sound they play.

Sometimes your mind will be blown when you aren’t able to identify when the second track came in, now that’s good mixing!

3. It’s Fun As Hell

We’re all music junkies here else you wouldn’t be reading this blog.

I can’t go for more than an hour without some kind of music, I always have it going. Even now, I have a Dark Psytrance mix blasting in my ears. It’s a little distracting but it keeps the pace of my writing (which I love).

When you practice for long hours, it’s good to just sit back and enjoy what others are playing.

Daydream about what it would be like if you were spinning that mix or producing that song, the happiness in people as they hear that track and use it to inspire you to mix something great.

How Addicted Are YOU?

How often do you listen to music each day?

In this post, I've compiled years of personal favorites to what I feel is my quintessential list of Psytrance artists, these listed are what I consider the best of the best.

Psytrance is my all-time favorite music genre. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that I have hippy parents or if it strikes a deep rooted longing to experience the abnormal.

Psytrance blends the progression of Trance with Psychedelic sounds to give you a wild trip – even when you’re not on drugs.

In this post, I’ve compiled years of personal favorites to what I feel is my quintessential list of Psytrance artists, these listed are what I consider the best of the best.

Here is my top 10 Psytrance artist list:

Hallucinogen

At the top of my list, and probably for many people that love Psytrance, is Simon Posford’s Hallucinogen.

Hallucinogen has become the classic sound of Psytrance and it’s no contest due to the phenomenal releases through the years.

Hallucinogen brings the most unique and powerful sound to the Psytrance genre. Since the release of Twisted in 1995, all other albums have been shadowed by the release.

Hallucinogen’s later album The Lone Deranger was a much anticipated follow up that did not disappoint.

To take his sound down to a chill level, Simon later release an In Dub remix of classic tracks backed by one of <a href="http://www.beginnerdj.com/my-top-10-favorite-psybient-artists-and-songs"title="my favorite Psybient artists" >my favorite Psybient artists, Ott.

We can only hope that Simon can find time between Shpongle and Younger Brother to make a new Hallucinogen album.

Hallucinogen – LSD

Doof

Not to give Hallucinogen all the light on this list, Doof holds a special place on my list as one of the best artist the Psytrance genre has seen.

Doof’s raw sound crafts two amazing albums: Let’s Turn On and It’s About Time.

The squelching acid bass lines combined with mind blowing psychedelic sounds combine perfectly to create everything that Doof has to offer.

Doof – Let’s Turn On

Astral Projection

A heavy contender in the Psytrance community, Astral Projection has been around for ages.

Although it can be debated that Astral Projection has more of a GOA sound, their influence over Psytrance cannot be omitted.

With nearly a dozen releases, Astral Projection has cemented their place in the Psytrance genre with amazing releases one after another.

Astral Projection – Another World

Eat Static

If you thought Astral Projection was the only one to make the list with a long history of producing Psytrance, Eat Static has basically been around since the beginning.

The release of Implant gained them a special place on this list. Implant is a classic Psytrance album that perfectly sums up the sound during the early nineties.

The warming analogue sounds of each sound crafts Eat Static’s albums into an unmissable experience.

Eat Static – Implant

Koxbox

Koxbox brings to us release after release of pounding Psytrance tracks.

No short of amazing, Koxbox is another classic example of Psytrance done right.

Put on any of Koxbox’s albums to hear why it made my top 10 Psytrance list.

Koxbox – Acid Drome

Electric Universe

Electric Universe makes this list for their combination of increasing perfection in each release and the dedication to their sound.

I’m a sucker for acid bass lines, Electric Universe takes the cake. That squelch from each sound coming from the 303 is such a great compliment to the psychedelic sound.

Electric Universe – Stardriver

Man With No Name

Man With No Name has become a legend with the Psytrance genre. If you were to talk to any Psytrance junkie, Man With No Name will definitely spill from their lips.

Man With No Name came into the scene with force and quietly walked away without leaving us with a sour taste in our mouths.

You can’t call yourself a true Psytrance fan if you don’t know the classic tune: Teleport.

Man With No Name – Teleport

Pleiadians

Is it possible that Pleiadians is the greatest Psytrance artist to grace the genre? It quite possibly be so.

Crossing the line between GOA and Psytrance, Pleiadians is the quintessential example that labels do not dictate your sound.

Whatever you want to label Pleiadian’s music as, it’s one thing: perfection.

Just put Identified Flying Objects on and you’ll see why Pleiadians is held so close to everyone.

Pleiadians – Asterope

Talamasca

Out of all that is listed on my top 10 Psytrance list, Talamasca is the only one that I have both begun to grow old of but find their older albums more and more amazing.

The original releases of Talamasca breathed a new life into the Psytrance genre. Unfortunately, their later offerings have begun to dry up the old school sound.

That’s not to say they don’t deserve to be on my list, nostalgia alone keeps them ringing through my ears.

Talamasca – Gemini

Tristan

Last, but not certainly least, sits Tristan.

Tristan gave us a darker sound that no one was expecting. As Psytrance picked up with happy psychedelic sounds, Tristan dove into the darker side of our minds.

Perhaps a proto release of Dark Psytrance, Audiodrome has all the warm feeling of raw analogue sound but with a touch of anger.

Tristan – Lord Of Fives

There you have it, my top 10 favorite Psytrance tunes.

There are certainly dozens I would like to mention but that defeats the purpose of a top 10 list does it not?

Psytrance continues to progress and break off into different sounds.
Lately <a href="http://www.beginnerdj.com/my-top-10-dark-psytrance-tracks"title="Dark Psytrance has been on my favorite list" >Dark Psytrance has been on my favorite list but with the emergence of new artists in the Psytrance community, I find myself coming back full circle to rediscover the genre I love.

What are your favorite Psytrance artists?

I wanted to share with you my top 10 Psybient artists and songs instead of declaring it in stone as “the best”.

Some call it Psybient. Some say Psydub. Maybe Psychill? Or perhaps Downtempo. Whatever you choose to call it, this is my list of the top 10 Psybient artists and songs.

These are some of the artists and their songs that have rocked my world. Psybient fits so well when we are in a relaxed mood, it feels as if everything is going to be all right.

Let’s do this…

Ott

Ott had always been flying low on my radar, his first album Blumenkraft appealed to me but it wasn’t until Skylon that I can say he really shined.

Skylon is, perhaps, on of the most chill albums I’ve ever listened to. During an interview, Ott (that is his real name btw) talked about how he created his music – with home made drums and shakers made from coffee cans and such ha!

Ott goes high on my top 10 Psybient list.

Ott – Queen of Everything

Shpongle

When I first listened to Shpongle it was on a rainy afternoon. I had already been a huge fan of Simon Posford from Hallucinogen and Raja Ram from 1200 Mics but I was never expecting this.

Shpongle has since become my favorite Psybient artist, I recommend them to everyone I talk to. Their unique style of music is some of the most beautiful and trippy you’ll ever listen to.

It’s funny because I could talk for hours about Shpongle but instead, let’s let the music do justice:

Shpongle – …But Nothing is Lost

Shulman

Shulman has such a different sound than most of the other Psybient artists on this list. Shulman’s glitchy style makes for some for the trippiest dub – it feels like you’re stuck in some computer game, Tron style.

Shulman is a great break from the earthy sounds you commonly find on many Psybient tracks.

Shulman – Invention

Bluetech

Bluetech has been producing many amazing albums for quite some time. I stumbled across him one rainy afternoon and it hit the spot. The glitchy sounds of Bluetech gives it a very unique sound.

Bluetech’s latest album “The Divine Invasion” has my favorite track of his:

Bluetech – Probability Tree

H.U.V.A. Network

The first live mix I heard by H.U.V.A. Network had me hooked. I really like their style of music.

My bud Dez got to see them live recently at an Alex Grey exhibit – lucky bastard.

H.U.V.A. Network – Indigo Room

Androcell

Androcell certain holds its own amongst the other Psybient artists.

I like Androcell because many of their songs are a little more poppy at times, not always very deep dub, it’s a bit more suited to listen when you’re actually doing things as apposed as just drifting off to space land.

Androcell – Dub Crystals

Vibrasphere

If there is one group that has always produced memorable music, it’s Vibrasphere. I had the chance to watch them live during Eclipse 2008 – the ground vibrated with chill tunes as I drift off into la la land.

Each release of Vibrasphere continues to be better and better, I can’t wait for the next.

Vibrasphere – Forest Fuel

Entheogenic

Entheogenic was another of the first Psybient artists that I discovered as I delved into the genre. The earthy, chanting sound of Entheogenic’s music really drew me in.

I bought a pair of bongo’s because of their album Golden Cap haha.

Entheogenic – Twilight Eyes

Younger Brother

Soon after discovering Shpongle, I also happened upon Simon’s other project: Younger Brother. After giving them a listen and finding out X from Prometheus was on board, I bought their albums.

Younger Brother really takes Psybient to a new level – it’s like a whole new sound. Their live performances are next to none, it’s amazing to see an electronic utilize traditional instruments to play in front of an audience.
